Werksessie: Terminologiebeplanning en -bestuur

27– tot 29 November, Stellenbosch

Workshop: Terminology planning and management

We would like to inform you that registration for the workshop in Terminology planning and management, presented by the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch (SU), is now open. Please take note of the following details regarding the workshop.

Dates and venue:

27 to 29 November 2013, campus of Stellenbosch University.

Presenters and topics:

Prof. Bassey Antia (University of the Western Cape): Systematic terminology management (27 November)

Terminology is an important feature of knowledge and communication in specialised subject fields. This oft-neglected context has implications for systematic terminology management, such as is required of language professionals working in a variety of contexts. This presentation will provide a thorough introduction to terminology management. It will draw on theory and relevant practice to address concerns practitioners typically enounter in the terminology-development life-cycle: how to respond to the project brief, project organisation and work processes and evaluation. At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and to apply knowledge garnered to enhance their experience of terminology management.

Prof. Elsabe Taljard (University of Pretoria): Terminology processing as prerequisite for technical translation (28 November)

This presentation will focus on term extraction and sourcing of term equivalents in lesser resourced languages. Additionally, attention will be paid to the writing of terminological definitions by providing guidelines and procedures for terminologists.

Prof. Rufus Gouws (Stellenbosch University): Specialised lexicography (29 November, morning only)

Terms need to be included and treated in dictionaries. This component of the workshop focuses on the lexicographic presentation and treatment of terms. A brief discussion is given of dictionary typology – with the main emphasis on  dictionaries dealing with languages for special purposes and dictionaries dealing with language for general purposes. Specialised lexicography is then discussed in more detail. Topics that come to the fore are the different types of specialised dictionaries, the user of the these dictionaries and the different situations of dictionary use. The lexicographic treatment will be determined by the user and his/her specific needs. Therefore different forms of treatment are required. The contents but also the structures and the functions of specialised dictionaries will be discussed. This component illustrates yet again the vibrant interaction between theory and practice in lexicography.

Registration fee:

R2 300-00.

The fee includes coffee/tea and light refreshments at tea times, but participants are responsible for their own lunches. Participants arrange and pay for their own travelling and accommodation.

Registration for the workshop is now open. To register, send an email to Dr. Amanda Lourens (alourens@sun.ac.za). Please register as soon as possible, since only a limited number of participants can be accommodated.

Final details on the programme and other arrangements will be sent to registered participants in due course.
