The Department of African Languages continuously introduces innovative courses and research projects to equip itself for the future. The Department offers language acquisition courses on an undergraduate level, but also expands its course material to meet the growing demand of mother tongue speakers at the University.
On a postgraduate level, the Department has experienced great growth and success. In 1996 the Department established a distance-tuition program for BA Honours- and Masters degrees, which has been very well received and supported. Through this programme, the Department has been able to reach students who would not other wise have had the opportunity to futher their studies with us.

The general aim of all undergraduate courses in African Languages is to foster communication skills in the language of study and to introduce the student to the research directions in relation to these languages, namely literature and linguistics.
Students who have already completed a successful course within a specific language group at another University may NOT follow a similar course within the same language group in this Department. In other words, a student who has passed a first year course in Zulu, a language in the Nguni-language group, may not follow any first year Xhosa courses because Xhosa is a member of the Nguni-language group too. However, such a student would be able to join a second year course in Xhosa.
Admission criteria: Grade 12 certificate with full matriculation exemption with an aggregate symbol of at least a D (50%). Students should note that certain courses carry specific additional requirements. These specific requirements are clearly set out in the University Calender.
