Activities
The Department prepares students for the challenges and opportunities in the performing arts in South Africa today. This is done by maintaining a sound balance between the theoretical and the practical in teaching, practical work in the theatre, research and community work. Teaching programmes have been designed to develop an understanding in students of the artistic, educational, social and philosophical significance and value of the theatre, while also imparting fundamental knowledge about the industry itself as well as developing theatre skills.
Productions form the core the Department's training philosophy and therefor maintain a close relationship with several professional theatre and media organisations (including ArtsCape, SABC, the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, Grahamstown Arts Festival, the KKNK and other), as well as with several community groups.
The Department is gradually building up a wide network of co-operation . Staff members, for example, are already providing a wide range of services as examiners, advisers and guest lecturers for the drama departments at the Universities of Zululand, Cape Town, Pretoria, Natal (Durban) en the Western Cape.
