IMPORTANT:
The HB Thom Theatre will for the foreseeable future only be used for training-related activities of the Drama Department and for meetings or functions where the stage area will not be used for productions.
The decision to make the theatre available for limited use was taken by the Stellenbosch University (SU) Management in lieu of certain safety risks and a potential negative effect on image of the University. These risks will be addressed systematically and the Safety and Risk Committee of the Drama Department will as a first step be involved in the further management of the risks.
The decision has led to a moratorium on commercial productions (in other words productions by groups other than the University). As the HB Thom Theatre is the only theatre venue for training, practical tests and exams, as well as training productions of the Drama Department (sometimes in cooperation with external or professional groups), Management has decided that the theatre will be made available only to the following categories of users:
For training and training-related activities, undertaken by or in cooperation with the Drama Department; and
For events in which the stage is not used for productions (such as for speeches or presentations where only a speaker or small number of people give lectures or make presentations).
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will have the first level decision-making powers on theatre usage within the stated guidelines and will consider each request on own merit while taking the identified risks into account
H.B. Thom Theatre
The H.B Thom Theatre is the main stage of the complex. It is well equipped technically and has an imposing foyer, a formal lounge, a reception area (Coffee Bar) and a small kitchen.

The VIP Room
The VIP Room is the formal lounge of the H.B. Thom Theatre. This venue is suitable for intimate performances, small-scale receptions, meetings and conferences. The VIP Room can be equipped with limited sound and lighting facilities.

Coffee Bar
The Coffee Bar is a reception area that is suitable for intimate performances, small receptions meetings and conferences. The Coffee Bar can be equipped with limited sound and lighting facilities.

Foyer
The foyer of the H.B. Thom Theatre is a spacious reception area that, with the addition of limited sound and lighting facilities, is also suitable for performances - it can seat up to 100 people.
