The Department of General Linguistics is situated in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Department offers undergraduate modules in General Linguistics and Applied English Language Studies (AELS). On a postgraduate level, the Department offers programmes in General Linguistics, Second Language Studies and Intercultural Communication

The Department is also involved in several research projects, focusing inter alia on intercultural discourse in health care, language shift and language change in local communities, specific language impairment in Afrikaans, English-Afrikaans code switching, and aspects of Afrikaans syntax.

The 2013 joint annual conference of the South African Association for Language Teaching (SAALT), the Southern African Applied Linguistics Association (SAALA) and the Linguistics Society of Southern Africa (LSSA), organised by Stellenbosch University's Language Centre, together with the Departments of General Linguistics, and Afrikaans and Dutch took place from the 1st to the 4th of July, 2013. This conference was a resounding success!
