Accountancy

The Department focuses mainly on training professional accountants and its programmes satisfy the requirements of various professional bodies. Students may also do research in one or more of the following: Auditing, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting or Taxation.


Chartered Accountants

This profession is controlled by the Public Accountants’ and Auditors' Board (PAAB) and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA). To qualify as a Chartered Accountant, a candidate must pass Part 1 of the professional examinations set by SAICA and Part 2 of the professional examinations set by either the PAAB or SAICA. Candidates may specialise in Auditing or Financial Management.

To gain admission to Part 1 of the examinations, the BAccHons (Accounting subjects) degree or the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PDA) is required.

To gain admission to Part 2 of the examinations with specialisation in Auditing, a student must have passed Part 1, articled for 18 months at an auditing firm in public practise and successfully completed a preparatory course in auditing with an accredited educational institution. 
To gain admission to Part 2 of the examination with specialisation in Financial Management, a student must have passed Part 1, articled for 18 months with an accredited training office outside of public practise and successfully completed a preparatory course in Financial Management with an accredited educational institution.

Chartered Management Accountants

The internationally recognised qualification of Chartered Management Accountant is obtained by passing the examination set by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) in London.

Our modules for the BCommHons (Management Accounting) comply with the CIMA requirements. Students who have obtained this BCommHons at Stellenbosch University are exempted from CIMA's first two examinations and may sit for CIMA's final examination immediately.

Certified Accountants


The internationally recognised qualification of Certified Accountant is obtained by passing the examinations set by the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA) in London and complying with the requirements set for practical experience.

Our modules for the BComm (Financial Accounting) degree comply with ACCA requirements. Students who have obtained this BComm degree are exempted from ACCA first nine subjects (maximum exemption that could be granted) and may sit for the remaining five subjects at two sessions.

Please note:  The HonsBComm (Financial Accounting) programme accreditation at the IBRA (Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors) is finalised by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

Students that attain the BComm (Financial Accounting) degree and comply with the necessary admission requirements will be accommodated in the HonsBComm (Management Accounting) programme.  Contact Department of Accounting for more information.

Training of Taxation Consultants

The programme for the qualifications MAcc (Taxation) or MComm (Taxation) runs over two years on the Stellenbosch and Bellville Park Campuses and entails group discussions and research. Students must prepare for these group discussions, which are twice a week. The research culminates in the writing of a minithesis and an article for an accredited journal.
Admission requirements for MAcc: BAcc and CA (SA), HonsBAcc, the PGDA, or an equivalent.
Admission requirements for MComm: BComm LLB or an equivalent.

Training of Computer Auditing Specialists

We offer a structured MAcc (Computer Auditing) programme running over two years by way of teaching (compulsory lectures once a month for 18 months) and a required research component (an assignment, or an article to be published in an accredited journal) for the last six months.
Admission requirements: HonsBAcc or equivalent and registration as a Chartered Accountant (SA).
