Statistics and Acturial Science
Ten
years before it was founded in 1946, this Department, one of the oldest
in the country, already presented statistics as a subject, mainly for
students in the commercial sciences. In this way we ended up in the
Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The number of environments
needing tuition in statistics is increasing even more rapidly. In 1985
we also started offering actuarial science. Presently we house the
Centre for Statistical Consultation; proof that we are serious about
active research.
Fields of Study Statistics
(up to doctorate), mathematical statistics (up to doctorate), actuarial
science (up to master's) and financial risk management (up to
doctorate). Listed below is a summary of the fields covered.
- Statistics and mathematical statistics:
Advanced statistical inference, Bayes statistics, biostatistics,
bootstrap and related computer-intensive techniques, categorical data
analysis, consultation practice, data mining, experimental design,
extreme value theory, large sample analysis, multidimensional scaling,
multivariate statistical analysis, probability models and stochastic
simulation, probability theory, non-parametric techniques, sampling
theory, S-PLUS and R programming, statistical learning theory,
statistical quality control, survival analysis, time series analysis.
- Actuarial Science:
The postgraduate programmes cover certain of the later subjects of the
Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. In the Honours programme Financial
Economics (CT8) and Core Application Concepts (CA1) are covered. The
Master's programme covers subjects on the Specialist level and also
requires the submission of a research project/thesis. Successful
students are now able to obtain exemptions (from the examinations of
the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries) for not only the Core Technical
subjects, but also for CA1 and up to two Specialist subjects.
- Financial Risk Management: Financial mathematical statistics, financial risk management and portfolio theory.
