Admission requirements and selection criteria for BEng programmes

ADMISSION  REQUIREMENTS  AND  SELECTION  CRITERIA  FOR  BEng  PROGRAMMES  FOR  2013

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students may be admitted to the four-year BEng degree if they:

A) are in possession of a (National) Senior Certificate or an exemption certificate issued by the Matriculation Board or equivalent; and

B) obtained an average of at least 60% in the applicable school final examination; and

C) passed the (National) Senior Certificate or equivalent examination in Mathematics with the minimum of 70% and Physical Sciences with the minimum of 60%. With regards to the curriculum which was applicable until 2007, at least a B in Mathematics HG and at least a C in Natural Sciences HG is required.

D) in the Matriculation or equivalent examination, the minimum following achievements in language subjects are required:

·        English 1st  Language: 40%; or

·        English 1st Additional Language: 60%; or

·        English 1st Additional Language: 50%, together with Afrikaans 1st Language: 40%, or Afrikaans 2nd Additional Language: 60%

Prospective students who meet the above-mentioned requirements shall still be subject to the application of the selection formula (see below).

The admission of prospective students who have already passed Grade 12 and have been admitted to the BEng programme may be regarded as final (see below). Prospective students who are in grade 12 at the time of their application, may be selected and admitted provisionally to a specific programme on the grounds of their grade 11 results. Their final admission, however, shall be subject to the submission of written proof of a (National) Senior Certificate or equivalent, which must meet the requirements as set out in paragraph 2.2.1 above, as well as exceeding the minimum requirement in terms of the selection formula for the particular programme.

Students may be admitted to the Extended Degree Programme if they:

A) are in possession of a (National) Senior Certificate or an exemption certificate issued by the Matriculation Board or equivalent; and

B) obtained an average of at least 55% in the applicable school final examination; and

C) passed the (National) Senior Certificate or equivalent examination in Mathematics with the minimum of 60% and Physical Science with the minimum of 50%.

Due to the limited availability of places and the strategic and purposeful management of enrolments, not all undergraduate applicants who meet the minimum requirements of a particular programme will automatically gain admission.

All undergraduate prospective students with the 2013 intake and beyond in mind must write the National Benchmarking Test (NBT). Consult the NBT web site (www.nbt.ac.za) or the SU web site at www.maties.com for more information on the National Benchmarking Test.

The results of the National Benchmarking Tests may be used by SU for the following purposes (details are available at www.maties.com):

·   Supporting decision-making about the placement of students in extended degree programmes,

·   selection, and

·   curriculum development.

Admission and Selection

An admission formula is used to determine whether prospective students in engineering meet the selection formula of the Faculty. Applications for a specific year must be submitted no later than 30 June of the preceding year. Prospective students who want to make use of university accommodation are advised to apply before June.

Provisional admission and selection is based on school results in grade 11 and final admission and selection is based on the results of the grade 12 final examination.

The selection grade is calculated as follows:

Selection grade = 2 x Mathematics performance + 2 x Physical Science performance + sum of performance for other subjects (except Life Orientation).

Mathematics must be presented as a subject, while Mathematical Literacy is not acceptable.

The percentage obtained for the subject concerned is used for the calculation of the selection mark.

The maximum mark is 800. To be selected, a prospective student must obtain at least the applicable minimum selection total. If a prospective student obtains at least the applicable minimum selection total, the student is selected and admitted on condition that if the total was not based on the student’s final examination results, the student must still obtain the applicable minimum total based on the final examination marks. Students below the minimum selection total for a programme, but above the minimum admission total, are placed on a waiting-list and may still be admitted to the programme concerned if places are available. Alternatively, such a student may instead be admitted to another programme, on condition that the student meets the minimum requirements for the programme concerned. If a student wishes to change to another field of study within engineering at the end of the first year, the student will be subjected to selection anew – as a rule a student needs at least 0,75 HEMIS credits, which means that 75% of the module credits of the first-year programme must be obtained, in order to stand a good chance to be permitted to change his field of study.

All applications for admission to the Faculty of Engineering will be subject a selection process. Prospective new first-year students will be required to write access tests (as from the 2013 intake, the access tests will be replaced by the National Benchmarking Test). These test results, as well as school results and other relevant information, may be taken into consideration. Personal interviews may form part of the selection requirements.

Prospective students who do not meet the admission requirements for BEng on grounds of their grade 11 results may re-submit their application with their grade 12 results.
