We take pride in showcasing the research of the Faculty of Engineering and we pay tribute to the immense dedication and talent of our many teams of researchers, all deeply committed to a common vision. When you collaborate with the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University, you enter an international world of learning and research.
The Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University is at the forefront of both basic and applied research, and enjoys international recognition for its work. By focusing on cutting-edge and inter-disciplinary research, the Faculty is experiencing strong growth in its research and postgraduate programmes.
Research activities are supported by quality staff, world-class experimental laboratories, computational facilities and research infrastructure. We are fortunate in attracting students of the highest calibre. This is reflected in the fact that the Eskom prize for the best final year student in the country, as well as the innovation prize for the best postgraduate student in the country, have both been awarded to Stellenbosch Engineering students in the last three years. Postgraduate students can expect to be supervised by top-notch researchers and academics who share their knowledge in a collegial environment.
Our Faculty is research-intensive and is one of the largest contributors to Stellenbosch University's research income. Research and teaching in the five academic departments are augmented by six major research Centres/Institutes of international standing. Research groups in these units are funded by various industries and research council programmes such as those of NRF, Thrip, Innovation Fund, etc.
Our researchers are very successful in supplying high-level engineering expertise to industry and postgraduate students. Relevant, industry-related research is conducted mostly within the main research focus areas of Stellenbosch University, namely:
* Technology for industry
* Sustainable biodiversity and the environment
* Competitive economy
* Building a new society
