Congratulations to Dr Alwyn Louw whose poster was selected as tbe best of 650 posters at the international AMEE conference in Malaga, Spain. His co-investigators were Martie van Heusden and Proff Ben van Heerden and Juanita Bezuidenhout.


Faculty well presented at SOTL Conference

The Faculty of Health Sciences was well presented at the 3rd Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference recently held in Somerset-West. The Faculty delivered 14 presentations of which 4 received merit awards. Staff members who contributed to the success of the event are Prof Dana Niehaus (front left), Prof Marietjie de Villiers, Dr Liezl Koen, Dr Johan Dempers, Prof Juanita Bezuidenhout, Ms Juanita Bester (back left) and Ms Martie van Heusden (CHSE).

The Rectors award for Teaching Excellence for the Faculty of Health Sciences for 2009 was awarded to


Elize Archer, Manager of the Clinical Skills Centre and staff member of the CHSE


Dr Pieter le Roux of the department Anesthesiology and Critical Care.


Jack Boulet from the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), Philadelphia, USA offered a session on Performance based assessment for the CHSE at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Short course in Undergraduate Clinical supervision.

The Centre for Health Sciences Education (CHSE) is very excited to have their first short course! This short course is applicable to all Health Sciences personnel. The first course started during July 2008. The course was attended by 1 medical doctor, 8 physiotherapist and 7 occupational therapists. The course consists of limited contact session time with the rest of the course available as distance education. Once students have attended the contact time, worked through the study guide and completed the assignment successfully, they receive a short course certificate as well as 25 CPD points.

The course covers the following topics:

  • The principles of clinical education and facilitation
  • How adults learn
  • Learning in a clinical environment
  • Different techniques of facilitating learning in the clinical setting
  • Assessment in the clinical setting
  • Feedback

Prof Ben van Heerden. Director of the Centre for Health Sciences Education was invited to become a Global Faculty Adviser (GFA) for the FAIMER Institute 2008. Global Faculty Advisers (GFA) are FAIMER alumni who have demonstrated commitment to the goals of FAIMER through their high level of participation. Prof van Heerden is the second person from the Faculty and third in the country to be invited. An extract from the invitation reads:

"We believe that your medical education expertise, internet communication skills, and direct experience and interest in the FAIMER Institute will substantially enhance the program. Through the GFA role, the FAIMER Philadelphia Institute is seeking to increase international faculty involvement. This role serves to both deepen the faculty's learning and understanding of the Institute educational strategies, and to increase the international perspective for the Institute Fellows. "

Clinical Skills Centre launched new equipment

The Clinical Skill Centre recently introduced new equipment to employees of the Faculty of Health Sciences.  These equipment included a new ALS mannekin, gynaecological models as well as self-produced CPR DVD's.



Highlights

  • The Senate and the National Department of Education approved the MPhil HSE programme during the last semester.
  • Prof Bouhuijs, working at the CHSE, was appointed as Extraordinary Professor in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences department
  • Dr Aziza Bawoodien was appointed as Clinical Progress Facilitator (The post is funded for two years via the Diversity Fund of the University.)
  • Ms Martie van Heusden was appointed from 1 Augusts 2007 as Supporter of the Co-workers of the CHSE
