Sven was born 1971 in Coburg, Germany and completed High School in 1991 with his Abitur (matric). Finished with his military service in 1992 he began to study biology at the University of Regensburg, Germany and achieved his Diploma in cell biology in 1997. He continued with his PhD in immunology from 1998 to 2003 working with antigen specific-T cells inducing different types of autoimmune diseases at the university's hospital in Regensburg.
Sven came to South Africa as a postdoctoral research fellow one year later. There he did four years of heart research at the Division of Medical Physiology dealing with cardiomyocytes in the context of diabetes mellitus type 2 and hypoxia. After that he moved into the field of routine diagnostics where he currently works as a senior researcher with the same department. His new area of research is about testing novel methods to detect pulmonary infections with M. tuberculosis in patients.
