education :: Master of Philosophy

Admission:

For the admission to the Master of Philosophy in Rehabilitation programme, a candidate shall hold a four year Bachelor's degree or an Honours degree in a appropriate health or health-related field, or an equivalent qualification approved for such purpose by the Senate, or shall in some other manner have attained in his/her particular fields of study a standard of competence deemed adequate for such purpose by the Senate.

Programme:

Students may choose one of two options for the MPhil (Rehabilitation) programme namely:

1. STRUCTURED MPHIL (REHABILITATION)
Students holding a four-year Bachelor's degree may take a part-time two year modular programme, which is Internet based.

2. THESIS MPHIL (REHABILITATION)
Students holding an appropriate Bachelor's with Honours degree may complete a thesis on a topic chosen in consultation with the departmental chairperson.

Duration of programme:

1. STRUCTRED MPHIL (REHABILITATION)
The programme shall extend over a minimum period of two academic years and is presented on a modular basis.

2. THESIS MPHIL (REHABILITATION)
Each student shall submit a thesis.  The programme shall extend over a minimum period of one academic year.

Content of Programme:

1. STRUCTRED MPHIL (REHABILITATION)

Module 1: 

Epidemiology and Research Methodology:
Basic epidemiology principles; scientific approach; study structures; sampling; skewing; measurements; basic statistical procedures; data analysis; protocol planning (60 hours).

Module 2:

Rehabilitation I:
Natural History of disability and preventive strategies; basics and strategies of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; classification of disabilities; intervention strategies; measurement of outcome; health-care services systems (national / international); models of team approach towards rehabilitation, organizing, management and administration of rehabilitation services; auditing and quality control (60 hours).

Module 3:

Rehabilitation II:
Macro- and micro economic aspects of rehabilitation services in South Africa, legal, political, ethical and moral aspects of disability; the disabled person in the community, including social integration of the disabled person (30 hours).

Module 4:

Research assignment:
The subject and the scope of the assignment are determined in consultation staff members from the Centre.

2. THESIS MPhil (REHABILITATION)

Where a student holds an appropriate Honours degree, the only requirement shall be that he/she us to submit a satisfactory thesis.  The thesis topic shall be determined in consultation with the staff members of the Centre.  Depending on the individual case, supplementary study from Modules 1 - 3 (see structured MPhil), may be prescribed by the staff members from the Centre.

Examinations and Promotions

STRUCTURED MPhil (REHABILITATION)
The students in this programme shall be continuously assessed by means of tests and assignments.  A minimum mark of 50 shall be required for each module.  To pass the programme, a student shall obtain a final mark of not less than 50.  During the second year of study the student shall submit a satisfactory research assignment from which it is evident that he is capable of conducting an independent scientific study and interpreting the results.  The four modules shall each contribute 25% to the final mark.  Module 1 and 2 shall be completed at the end of the first year and Modules 3 and 4 at the end of the second year.

Paper 1: Epidemiology and Research Methodology
Paper 2: Rehabilitation I; and
Paper 3: Rehabilitation II

THESIS MPhil (REHABILITATION)
In order to pass, a student shall obtain for the thesis a mark of not less than 50.
