Division of Neurology
The Division is part of the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Campus, noting that Neurology is a separate discipline, and not a subspeciality of Internal Medicine. Our clinical services are based at the Neurology Unit of Tygerberg Hospital with outreach to Worcester hospital. We offer a four year course in Neurology, with separate electives in Neuroradiology and Pathology. Training also involves extensive experience in EEG interpretation and the performance of EMG and nerve conduction studies. We currently offer specialized services in Epilepsy with Dr James Butler running the service in collaboration with Groote Schuur Hospital, and have two dedicated video-EEG monitoring beds for this purpose. In addition, Dr Henning runs our Neuromuscular service, and Professor Carr runs the Movement Disorders Clinic and research based genetic testing for Movement Disorders. We have extensive links with outreach programmes outside South Africa.
