A-rating for Professor in Paediatrics

Prof Simon Schaaf, a clinical researcher, was recently awarded for his excellence in research in the field of childhood TB and MDR TB when he received an A-rating from the National Research Foundation. Schaaf is from the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Health Sciences.

He is only the second researcher in the Faculty of Health Sciences to receive an A-rating. The first A-rating was awarded to Prof Peter Donald, also for research in childhood TB.

Schaaf considers clinical research as an important component for the successful treatment of patients. As international expert in the handling and treatment of MDR TB in children, he consults people worldwide. "To be considered as an international expert is a special privilege and honour," Schaaf said.

According to Schaaf, one cannot fly solo when one does clinical research. "It's a team effort that involves many people." He appreciates his colleagues and students for their support and the important role they play in his research.
