Name change for Faculty of Health Sciences

The faculty's name change has been approved by the University Council. The faculty is now known as the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Motivation for the change of name was, primarily, based on two considerations:

  1. Distinguishing ourselves from health science faculties in South Africa that do not offer medical training is increasingly important from a marketing perspective.
  2. At the international level, the term “faculty of health sciences” (as opposed to “medical school”) is generally restricted to institutions that do not provide medical education. This causes confusion, especially when dealing with our international colleagues, and does not help to promote the stature of the Faculty and University as a high quality training facility for medical doctors.

The new name reflects the contributions of all our health practitioners and scientists, in respect of teaching, research and service delivery.  The faculty continues to value the commitment, achievements and quality of all our students and staff who will continue to work under this new faculty name.
