DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC LAW
The department of Public Law is responsible for undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses and research in the areas of administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law, criminal procedure, human rights, international law, international criminal law, law of evidence, legal philosophy and socio-economic rights. The department is responsible for the teaching of a number of compulsary LLB modules, elective LLB modules for final year LLB students and also a number of LLM modules - Advanced SA Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law and Legal Medicine.
The department has a strong commitment to relevant research of high quality.Transformative constitutionalism; national, transnational and international developments in criminal law and procedure; and the scope and content of specific fundamental rights are some of the broad research themes. The department has one of the best research output results at Stellenbosch University for the past 5 years.In addition, the department also has a large number of registered Master thesis and doctoral students. The Harry Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights is housed in the department, and the SARCHI Chair in Property Law is also associated with the department of Public Law.
Members of the Department of Public Law are committed to engage with the broader academic and professional community and civil society. Members serve in various capacities on the boards of NGO's, government bodies, specialist organisations, and on the editorial boards of academic journals.
The department has a long tradition of cultivating and maintaining relations with international scholars and institutions, thus engaging with an international academic community, while contributing to the development of South African law under a supreme Constitution.
