The process through which government obtains the goods and services it needs to fulfill its public functions is generally known as public procurement. World wide this function represents significant portions of public spending and economic activity generally and it is no different in Southern Africa. Public procurement is closely regulated in law and the field of law called public procurement regulation is internationally one of the fastest growing areas of legal interest both in practice and academia. In Southern Africa, as in the rest of Africa, this field has been poorly studied. A project funded by the British Academy and conducted in collaboration between researchers at the University of Stellenbosch and University of Nottingham now aims at addressing this lacuna.
This page aims to facilitate research on public procurement regulation in Southern Africa. It contains information on the British Academy funded project, a bibliography of materials on Southern African public procurement regulation as well as links to other sources of information on procurement. The page also serves as an African link to the Procurement Law Academic Network, an international network of academic lawyers working in the area of public procurement regulation.
